Technology Scan and Assessment

What is the Next "State of the Art" for Connected Vehicles and other Intelligent Transportation Systems?

The Technology Scan and Assessment series of studies tracks trends, technologies, and innovations that could influence, or be leveraged as part of, next-generation intelligent transportation systems within a five to seven year time horizon. Issues covered include not only technical, but social, regulatory, and business drivers behind the new technologies' potential for adoption.

The research scope for series is the Technology Watch List, which includes identified technologies that enable critical information processes and flows, from four broad categories: data acquisition (sensors), dissemination (fixed/mobile telecommunications), processing (computing systems), and management (decision support systems). Each report published is a 10 to 15 page white paper describes  a particular technology's trajectory in terms of performance and potential for adoption, along with major opportunities and limiting factors.

Under sponsorship from the US Department of Transportation (USDOT) Intelligent Transportation Systems Joint Program Office (ITS-JPO), the Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITS America) is conducting this project.  This multi-year scanning series will assess emerging, converging and enabling technologies outside the domain of mainstream transportation research. The purpose of the project is to:

Technology Scan Chart

1) Synthesize and enrich the discussion about new technologies between members of the engineering community interested in  "Connected Vehicle" (Vehicle-to-X) applications;

2) Establish, or otherwise validate or revise, key assumptions in USDOT R&D programs regarding scalability, security, or safety of particular technologies; and

3) Inventory new technology-enabled systems that may interface with future Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC)  “connected vehicle” core system.

Outreach and Webinars

The project includes efforts to educate and create dialogue between technologists across different application communities. The Connected Vehicle Technology Scan Webinar Series is conducted in conjunction with release of each technical insight report.
