  • A Cooperative Driving Support System Based On ITS On-Board Unit

We developed a practical vehicle-infrastructure cooperative driving support system by
expanding the common platform of ITS on-board unit(1). During the Tochigi DSSS (Driving
Safety Support Systems) test operations, which is the first field test of DSSS for right/left
turning at the intersection on the public road in Japan(7), we evaluated feasibility of the system
and functional effectiveness for DSSS. With the cooperation of road-side and onboard DSSS
control systems, the driver is enabled to notice “invisible risks ahead” timely.

  • A Comparison Of Communications Systems For VII

This paper compares the benefits of several different communications systems for fulfilling
the goals of Vehicle Infrastructure Integration envisioned by the US Department of
Transportation, including Cellular, WiFi, WiMax, Satellite, and DSRC. It concludes that
DSRC offers the most useful functional and performance attributes.

  • A Brokerage Model for Reducing Costs of ADA/Paratransit Services in Large Metro Areas

Large metropolitan transit systems are facing acute financial stress due to ever increasing ADA/paratransit costs. Traditional methods generally entail the governing transit agency providing one or more subcontractors with vehicles, fuel assistance, facilities and assistance with technology, on top of a per trip cost. All of which contribute to growing budgeting problems [1].

  • 95 Express Phase 1 Performance Update

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has begun implementation of the
FDOT’s first dynamically priced managed lanes, known as 95 Express. 95 Express is part of a
series of operational improvements along the I-95 Corridor in Southeast Florida that will
improve the safety, passenger throughput, and travel reliability. 95 Express combines express or High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes with carpool and transit incentives, ramp metering, rapid
incident detection and enhanced operational management strategies. 95 Express is sponsored by Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the FDOT, and the Federal Transit Administration
(FTA) through the Miami Urban Partnership Agreement. For the project, an Intelligent
Transportation System (ITS)/Toll Equipment/Operations Team was formed that included FDOT
District Six (FDOT D6), FDOT District Four, FDOT Central Office ITS and Operations staff,
and Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise (FTE) toll operation personnel.

  • 95 EL: What Is It Worth?

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is evaluating the value of the 95 EL Project
from many perspectives. This paper looks at the value thus far to the FDOT and the public
    regarding:

    • Dynamic Pricing – The comparison of dynamic pricing versus time-of-day pricing is

    assessed.

    • Trip Value to Non Transit Customer – Traffic volumes and speeds are evaluated for various scenarios to assess motorists’ behavior to variable toll amounts.
    • Sustainability – Revenues are compared to operations and maintenance costs to determine

if the project will need additional operations and maintenance funding.
