  • Traffic Prediction using Pheromone Model

    Social insects such as ants, bees and wasps perform complex tasks with pheromone communication
    despite lack of top-down style control. We have examined applications of this
    pheromone mechanism towards ITS. In this paper, a car is regarded as an insect that releases
    virtual pheromone that represents traffic congestion level. We propose a method to predict
    traffic congestion of the immediate future through a pheromone mechanism without resort to
    the use of a traffic control center. Furthermore we introduced multi semantics of pheromone
    to refine the prediction performance. We evaluate our method using actual traffic data and the
    results indicate our method is superior to other conventional techniques and our previous
    method.

  • Traffic Operations Center/ITS Field Components Communication Study

    The communication design and technology selections are very important factors in an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). Once the communication design is deployed, these communication networks tend to be in place for many years therefore these items need to be well understood. This paper highlights the technical & cost options that were evaluated and presented to Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) District 8.

  • Traffic Management Communications Using A Wireless Network In New York City

    The City of New York has spent the last 4 years moving toward a 100% wireless network for
    the interconnection of all of its traffic signal controllers. The same wireless network will also
    provide communications for several other City services including police, fire, emergency call
    boxes, and AVL and support services for the City’s Sanitation Department. This paper
    describes the history of traffic control in New York City, the process which has been followed
    for the design and deployment of the Traffic Management System, the field devices and the
    integration into the wireless network. It will also describe the changes which have been
    introduced into the NTCIP standards to support the deployment of traffic control over this, or
    any other wireless network due to the nature of packet loss and latencies. Finally, it will
    describe some of the lessons learned and statistics gathered during this process.

  • Traffic Information Trials In Big Cities Of China

    The paper introduces the trials of traffic information in big cities of China. In 2007, we started
    the statistical data based traffic information navigation experiment in Beijing. The success of
    the test gathers lots of attention in the market. It also accelerates our further work in more big
    cities of China. In order to provide high quality traffic information, we carry out more trials
    and evaluating the accuracy and coverage of traffic information. The result of trial is analyzed
    in present paper.

  • Traffic Incident Management - A Gateway to Regional Transportation Operations

    Transportation agencies in Metro Detroit were early adopters of intelligent transportation systems technologies, but the use of these technologies to support regional transportation operations depends on the involvement of a wide range of partners with similar interests in safe and efficient traffic movement.  This recognition led to the establishment of a traffic incident management program and a regional concept of transportation operations to organize both transportation agencies and public safety partners to promote safer, more efficient operations.  This organization provides the institutional support to sustain continuing regional transportation operations.
