  • Towards The Concept Of Smart Infrastructure

A lack of access to information is a hindrance to the development of dynamic transportation
systems. In an effort to further our understanding of what an increased access to dynamically
updated information could mean pertaining to efficiency gains in transport networks, this
paper presents findings from a research project demonstrating the concept of smart
infrastructure. Additionally, research in progress is introduced on combining smart
infrastructure with goods in order to further improve the efficiency of transport networks.

  • Toward Transport Payment Integration In Portland Oregon

Transit and other transport operators in Portland, Oregon should plan to use contactless credit
card transactions to reduce costs, create a convenience for users, and enable riders to make
more rational travel choices. Growing support for radio frequency identification (RFID) in
the finance industry creates opportunities for unprecedented public-private partnerships in
    this area.

  • Toward The Use Of Avl Buses As Probes For Regular Vehicle Traffic Conditions Estimation

Large spatial and temporal coverage and regular frequency (headway) make transit buses equipped with automatic vehicle location (AVL) system an attractive alternative datasource for an urban signalized street advanced traveler information system (ATIS). Althoughresearch of using AVL buses as probes can be traced to more than a decade ago, the real-lifeapplications are scant. This paper reviews five relevant studies since 1990’s. The study objective, data, modeling techniques, application types and findings about the utilization of AVL information are summarized and compared. It is identified that the major obstacles in utilizing bus probes are the many unknowns of bus–car dynamics in an urban traffic stream, the uncertainties in bus operations, the lack of knowledge of traffic phenomena on urban streets and the technical challenge in handling of AVL data. Thoughts of future research needs are given at the end of the paper.University of Illinois at Chicago

  • Toward Realization Of Smartway In Japan

In Japan, various entities have made efforts to realize manifold ITS services using advanced
technology and have developed the targeted Next-generation road system, ‘Smartway’.
National Institute for Land and Infrastructure Management (NILIM) of the Ministry of Land,
Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) have placed the roadside equipment and
prepared a new on-board unit to conduct on-road trials over the Metropolitan Expressways.
The outcome of the series of tests has provided a valuable input to ’Smartway Demo 2007’,
which gave a good opportunity to reveal our years-long research and development effort
achievement in public. The paper reports the course of Smartway R&D we followed, what we
have learned through the trial tests in serviceable road sections, and further reports the
promotional and extensive effort to extend the service in the future.

  • Toll Collection Based on Networks in China

This paper discusses “Toll Collection Based on Networks (TCBN) in China”, and main
focuses on Central Data Processor System (CDPS) and Electrical Toll Collection (ETC). This
paper introduces Central Data Processor System (CDPS), system structure of software and
hardware, standards, Automatic Vehicle Identification (AVI), Automatic Vehicle Classification
(AVC); and Video Enforcement Systems (VES). Toll collection based on networks will be main
direction of toll collection in china and ETC act as a very important role in TCBN.
