ITS America Launches Leadership Circle to Advance Smart Technology Solutions to National, State and Local Transportation Challenges

Washington, D.C. – The Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITS America) is pleased to announce the formation of a new transportation thought leadership group – the ITS America Leadership Circle.

Approved unanimously by the ITS America Board of Directors last week, the Leadership Circle will promote and enhance the use of technology to solve transportation problems.  The founding members of the Leadership Circle represent an important group of public and private sector executives who will advise ITS America and the broader transportation community in their thinking on significant issues such as MAP-21 implementation and reauthorization, alternative transportation financing mechanisms, and evolving business models.

“The formation of the Leadership Circle takes us to a new level in our ability to offer intelligent solutions throughout the transportation system,” said Dr. Peter Sweatman, Chair of the ITS America Board and Director, University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute.  “It is particularly pleasing that private and public sector leaders will be working together to probe more deeply into the unique advantages and challenges of ITS.”

There are currently 22 founding members of the Leadership Circle.  Private sector members include: CH2M HILL, Eberle Design Inc., Econolite Group Inc., IBM, Image Sensing Systems Inc., Intel, Iteris Inc., Kapsch TrafficCom, Schneider Electric/Telvent, Siemens, and TransCore Holdings, Inc. Public sector members include the: California DOT (Caltrans), Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Carnegie Mellon University, Contra Costa Transportation Authority, Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), Michigan DOT, National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), University of California, Berkeley (California PATH), University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI), and Texas Transportation Institute (TTI).

The role the Leadership Circle will fulfill is: 1) to advise the ITS America Board on how to further widespread ITS deployment; 2) to promote and champion ITS solutions; and 3) to assist in providing thought leadership and advocating on behalf of ITS America.  The Leadership Circle will work alongside the ITS America Board and with ITS America staff on cutting edge projects to define and expand the ITS marketplace, forge new partnerships, educate policy and decision makers, and encourage investment in transportation technology.
