Nation's Leading Transportation Technology
Association Applauds President's Call for Innovation in the State
of the Union Address
WASHINGTON, D.C. - ITS America President and CEO Scott Belcher
issued the following statement in response to the President's State
of the Union address on Tuesday:
"The President's State of the Union hit the mark in focusing
on investing in our nation's infrastructure, advancing new research
and technology, and ensuring that our education system supports a
21 st century workforce. Innovation is the key to our
ability to compete in the global marketplace. China, Japan and
other countries are investing heavily in intelligent transportation
technologies to modernize their infrastructure and spur private
sector innovation and job creation. We need to show the same
commitment to innovation within the transportation sector as we do
in the energy, health care, and other sectors.
From cars that avoid crashes and smart highways that cut
congestion, to stress-sensing bridges and buses that provide
real-time information for a reliable commute, 21 st
century technologies are critical ingredients for improving U.S.
economic competitiveness and keeping people and goods moving.
As policymakers look for ways to do more with less, one area
of common ground should be a new multi-year transportation bill
that not only maintains our transportation system, but leverages
private sector investment and innovative technologies to improve
safety, cut congestion, reduce costs, and meet the demands of
future generations."
