Summary of Outcomes From the 40th Meeting of the International Organization for Standardization’s Technical Committee 204 (ISO/TC204) for Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS)

WASHINGTON, DC – The Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITS America), along with 160 participants from over 25 different countries gathered for a weeklong meeting in Moscow, Russia on October 14-19, to attend the International Organization for Standardization 40th Meeting. The weeklong series of meetings focused on a diverse set of emerging ITS standards including, but not limited to: Cooperative systems; Vehicle to infrastructure communications; Electronic fee collection; and fleet management.

The following is a brief summary of the decisions made:

ISO/TC204 has undertaken two new important initiatives, thought to be the first of their kind.  The first being a successful workshop on Public Transport Emergency Services and Disaster Recovery, which resulted in the creation of a new work item of the same name.  A follow-up workshop has been planned for the April 2013 meeting of ISO/TC204 in Seattle, Washington.

At the Moscow meeting, ISO/TC204 also reached an agreement with its Russian counterparts and members of the Russian Ministry of Transport to create a new study group to explore standardization requirements concerning ITS Corridor Management, including its technology testing and validation.  This effort will directly support a Russian initiative to build a highway corridor stretching from Europe to the Pacific Ocean.

As noted, the next meeting of ISO/TC204 will occur from 14-19 April 2013 in Seattle, Washington and will be hosted by ITS America, whom also sponsors the ISO/TC204 Secretariat and the US Technical Advisory Group (US TAG) to ISO/TC204.

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is one of three world bodies responsible for the planning, development and adoption of international standards. As part of ISO, Technical Committee 204 (ISO/TC204) is the main body responsible for international ITS standardization.
