ITS America Honors Student Essay Competition Winners

Next Generation of ITS Thinkers Shine at ITS America’s 2012 Annual Meeting

WASHINGTON, DC –The Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITS America) announced today the winners of their Annual Student Essay Competition sponsored by Southwest Research Institute.  The Student Essay Competition is designed to provide an opportunity for today’s transportation and engineering students to apply their knowledge in a thought-provoking and enjoyable competition and to build awareness of ITS as a career path with unlimited potential.  

 “The student essay competition encourages students around the U.S. to take a more active interest in the application of advanced technologies to transportation by challenging them to focus their concepts and ideas,” said Steve Dellenback, Ph.D., PMP of Southwest Research Institute.  “We are proud to be a part of this ITS America initiative to foster and encourage the advanced technology consultants and solution providers of tomorrow.” 

 The following winners were recognized today during the ITS America 22nd Annual Meeting & Exposition at National Harbor, Maryland, just outside of Washington, D. C.  Their essays are located here.  

 James Wong, EIT from the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology, was selected as the 2012 winner for his paper, “Facing the Barriers to Real-time Integrated Multimodal Traveler Information in American Metropolitan Areas.”  Wong also received the $1,500 first place award and was invited to present his winning essay at a dedicated interactive session area in the exhibit hall.

 Kshitij Jerath from the Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering – Larson Transportation Institute at Penn State University was recognized as the second place winner for the paper, “Cooperative Intelligent Vehicles:  Are we there yet?” 

 The third place winner was Laura Black from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Center for Transportation at the University of Delaware with the paper, “Towards Social Media & Web 2.0.”
