Supports Development of 3rd National Traffic Signal Report Card
The National Transportation Operations Coalition (NTOC) is pleased to announce that the 2011 Traffic Signal Operations Self Assessment is now available at www.ite.org/selfassessment. Please complete your Traffic Signal Operations Self Assessment by November 30, 2011.
The 2011 Traffic Signal Operations Self Assessment has been updated to reflect comments received following the previous self-assessments (2005 and 2007) and to better connect traffic signal management and operations activities to operations objectives. In addition, an effort was made to remove redundant questions and reduce the bias toward centrally managed traffic signal systems. The results from the 2011 self-assessment will continue to allow for some comparison to the results of the previous versions so that agencies can gauge changes over time. The Self Assessment should take no more than one hour to complete.
The Traffic Signal Operations Self Assessment is part of an effort to bring more attention to the need for additional investment in traffic signal operations through the National Traffic Signal Report Card. The Traffic Signal Report Card provides a composite national score of agency practices and policies that support traffic signal management, operations, and maintenance. Traffic signal systems are historically underfunded and are one of the first areas to be cut in tight budget times. However, investment in traffic signal operations is one of the most cost effective means to improve transportation system safety and efficiency. The self-assessment provides agencies with a tool to benchmark current practices and to evaluate opportunities for improving their policies and practices to better support the management of traffic signal systems.
To have your agency’s score included in the 3rd National Traffic Signal Report Card, you must submit your self assessment by November 30, 2011. With your submission, you will receive a certificate of completion and a copy of your completed self assessment. Keep in mind, this assessment can be used at any time to grade the performance of your system.
