INRIX Selected by South Carolina Department of Transportation to Provide Real-time Traffic Speeds and Travel Times Statewide
KIRKLAND, Wash., Oct. 15 - Intelligent Transportation Society
of America member INRIX®, a leading provider of traffic and
navigation services in North America, today announced that the
South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is now
accessing and utilizing INRIX's real-time traffic speed and travel
time services for 1,200 centerline miles of South Carolina's major
roadways, including the entire Interstate network and key routes to
and near the Myrtle Beach and Beaufort areas. SCDOT has contracted
with INRIX via the I-95 Corridor Coalition's Vehicle Probe Project,
becoming the third state, along with New Jersey and North Carolina,
to establish "statewide" coverage through the project. This now
allows agencies in seven contiguous states to see the same
information on traffic conditions allowing them to better monitor
and manage their systems, individually and collectively.
For nearly a year, INRIX has been supplying data to SCDOT for
the Columbia area to support traffic management and operations. In
addition to supporting statewide traffic and incident management,
SCDOT also plans to incorporate INRIX data into the upcoming
upgrades to its travel information services, including the state's
511 telephone service scheduled to launch in 2010.
"The past year has given us the opportunity to kick the tires
on INRIX's ability to accurately monitor traffic conditions," said
Tony Sheppard, SCDOT's State Traffic Operations Engineer. "The
demonstrated quality of data, its cost-effectiveness, and the
ability to join the multi-state project with the I-95 Corridor
Coalition so we can more effectively monitor and manage traffic
across state lines, made expanding INRIX data statewide the ideal
solution."
INRIX provides SCDOT and other public and private sector
customers with instant access to the most comprehensive and
reliable traffic information available. INRIX crowdsources
real-time traffic information from the INRIX Smart Driver Network,
over 1.3 million commercial and consumer vehicles and mobile
devices, including anonymous "GPS probe" data from the recently
launched and highly successful INRIX TRAFFIC! iPhone application.
Combining billions of data points with road sensor information from
Departments of Transportation across the country allows INRIX to
provide the most accurate and timely picture of traffic conditions
nationwide.
"SCDOT is a leader in statewide traffic operations," said Rick
Schuman, INRIX's vice president, public sector. "We are proud to
supply traffic information that will help improve system
management, incident response and provide better information and
condition to travelers in South Carolina."
