PrePass Weigh Station Technology Blazes Solar Trail
Solar Technology Performance Robust for Six Months
PHOENIX, AZ, Oct. 30 - PrePass weigh station service is now
using sun power to verify truck compliance with state requirements
on U.S. 1 near Flagler, Florida.
"PrePass' pioneering efforts can blaze a trail for a more
sustainable and eco-friendly transportation system as other
intelligent transportation technologies follow suit," said Richard
P. Landis, president and CEO of HELP, Inc., the public private
partnership that offers the weigh station technology.
PrePass is a sophisticated system that enables qualified
trucks to comply electronically with state safety, registration and
weight requirements at highway speeds. By avoiding weigh station
stops and idling in queues, trucks save time, reduce fuel
consumption and contribute to a cleaner and safer transportation
system.
"PrePass electronically processed more than 55 million weigh
station events in 2008, saving carriers more than 22 million
gallons of fuel. Based on Environmental Protection Agency data,
PrePass has reduced emissions at least 222 thousand metric tons,
the equivalent of more than 11,000 U.S. households.
Solar power is created from a small cluster of photovoltaic
cells mounted on top of Florida's roadside PrePass reader. An
on-site battery array enables energy to be stored for powering the
reader during inclement periods of up to 8 days.
Florida's Flagler site is one of 24 locations within the state
using PrePass weigh station technology.
Beginning in November, PrePass will unveil an expanded suite
of services that help truckers manage fleets, control costs and
improve highway safety. To be among the first to preview the new
