FHWA to Award Up to Seven Contracts for ITS Research Applications that Improve Environmental Performance
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) will award up to seven
contracts for intelligent transportation systems (ITS) research
projects that enhance techniques for capturing and managing
real-time data essential to the development of environmental
applications. Proposals must be submitted electronically via e-mail

later than 4:00 p.m. EDT on July 16, 2010. Maximum funding per
award is $40,000.
The FHWA is specifically targeting innovative research on ITS
applications that make use of IntelliDriveSM data and
resources to improve environmental performance.
IntelliDriveSM is a multimodal initiative that aims to
enable safe, interoperable networked wireless communications among
vehicles (light vehicles, transit, and freight), the
infrastructure, and passengers' personal communications devices. As
part of the IntelliDriveSM research effort, the U.S.
Department of Transportation's ITS Joint Program Office (JPO)
initiated the Applications for the Environment: Real-Time
Information Synthesis (AERIS) research program to generate and/or
acquire environmentally-relevant real-time transportation data to
create actionable information to support and facilitate "green"
transportation choices by transportation system users and
operators.
The FHWA Broad Agency Announcement stated that successful proposals
will leverage existing research and stakeholder activities to
"identify and possibly enhance innovative research on ITS
applications that make use of IntelliDriveSM data and
resources to improve environmental performance; capture and manage
real-time data relevant to environmental applications development
and performance measurement; and identify and possibly enhance
evaluation techniques, performance measurement, and data
acquisition techniques."
