Congressional Fact Finding Sessions
A Unique Opportunity to Provide Testimony to Congress--TBD
The Annual Meeting will feature Congressional fact finding sessions designed to provide opportunities for attendees to serve as panelists and ‘testify’ on topics of interest to Congress relating to surface transportation reauthorization and other legislation. The sessions will be moderated by senior staff members from Congressional committees and caucuses with jurisdiction over transportation and technology-related legislation. Congressional fact finding sessions are an exciting opportunity to share your expertise with Congressional officials and engage in a meaningful discussion about the critical role ITS plays in our nation’s transportation system.
Advancing ITS--Reauthorization and Beyond

The Congressional ITS has taken an active role promoting ITS solutions in the transportation reauthorization bill, successfully offering amendments to expand funding eligibility for ITS projects and introducing the Smart Technologies for Communities Act (H.R. 995) to fund ITS deployment wihch was incorporated in the Senate version of the legislation. ITS Cacus staff will hear recommendations from a panel of experts about what Congress and the U.S. Department of Transportation should be doing to advance the broader and more effective deployment of ITS solutions to address our nation's transportation challenges, both during the reauthorization process and beyond.
Connected Vehicles

As Congress works to reach agreement on a surface transportation reauthorization bill, House Transportation and Infrastructure (T&I) Committee staff will hear from experts in the ITS industry about the Connected Vehicle program, included how a Connected Vehicle network could help address the challenges facing our nation's transportation system. From preventing crashes and reducing traffic congestion to providing motorists with real-time information and offering new transportation financing mechanisms, this session will focus on how we move from research to deployment of this game-changing network and how it will impact our nation's transportation users.
Congestion Management

Senate and House transporation staff from Members of the Senate Environment and Public Works and House Transporation Committeees will hear from experts regarding best practices to better manage traffic congestion. Strategies will be discussed to optimize roadway capacity through a suite of ITS technologies, influence driver behavior, and provide incentives for travelers to drive during non-peak travel periods as well as consider alternative modes of transportation. From improving traffic signalization and incident management tp providing real-time travel information and electronic tolling, this session will focus on how we can address traffic congestion without necessarily having to add roadway capacity.
ITS Standards Workship (Presented by USDOT)
Sunday, May 20 1:00 p.m-5:00 p.m.
The ITS JPO Professional Capacity Building Program will present a workshop on the ITS Standards Training series. The workshop will include excerpts from the first three training modules:
- I101: Using ITS Standards: An Overview
- A101: Introduction to Acquiring Standards-based ITS Systems
- A102: Introduction to User Needs Identification
Participants will also gain exposure to the additional 15 modules currently available for them to pursue online. These modules cover practical applications for acquiring and testing standards based ITS systems. The modules are tailored to address systems designed using the Systems Engineering Process (SEP) and those designed without using the SEP. Training will include hands-on exercises to support participants’ understanding of concepts. The workshop will inform participants of 19 new modules currently under development and the opportunities for future training, including individual online learning or the possibility of grouping modules together to provide a blended learning experience with an instructor.
State Chapters Strengthening Workshop

ITS America’s State Chapters Council will host this workshop to provide members of its state and regional chapters with information and strategies to achieve their maximum potential. The State Chapters Strengthening Workshop will bring together chapter leaders from around the country to share best practices and lessons learned on subjects crucial to state chapter success. The workshop will be followed by a networking reception from 5:30-7:00 p.m. where attendees can continue the learning and information exchange.

Building on the success of the inaugural Emergency Responder Day at the 2011 World Congress on ITS in Orlando, this year’s ITS America Annual Meeting will continue this new tradition by holding Emergency Responder Day on Tuesday at the Conference to emphasize the importance of incident and emergency management in our transportation system. The day’s activities in the Exhibit Hall hope to encourage networking and information sharing among incident and emergency responders and transportation professionals to enhance the contribution all make to public safety and congestion management and to highlight the invaluable role that technology plays.

Beginning with the invitation to attend the U.S. Department of Transportation Plenary from 8:30 am to 10:00 am, students from around the region and the country are invited to participate in ITS America's Annual Meeting activities to encourage dialogue and networking between transportation professionals from around the world and those who will follow them—our high school, university, and graduate students who have shown or declared an interest in the field of transportation. Events will access to the exhibit hall, an afternoon student engagement and networking session with transportation leaders, and career building services.
ITS America Business Meeting & Awards Presentation

ITS America Board Chair Abbas Mohaddes will update the membership on the state of ITS during this annual business meeting. ITS America President & CEO will offer a snapshot of what is happening at ITS America. Integrated Corridor Management: The Intersection of Highway and Transit Operations (Presented by FTA)

The U.S.DOT’s Federal Transit Administration (FTA) is organizing a workshop focused on the Integrated Corridor Management (ICM) initiative on May 23, 2012 during the ITS America Annual Meeting and Exhibition at the Gaylord Convention Center in National Harbor, MD.
The purpose of the workshop is to:
- Discover how ICM can help you improve the performance of your region’s multimodal transportation corridors.
- Explore challenges and opportunities with real-world implementers from freeway, arterial and transit perspectives including representatives from the two ICM Demonstration Sites.
- Examine what it really takes to integrate technologies and operations across modes and jurisdictions to improve corridor performance.
- Discuss how transportation operations can better coordinate with neighboring agencies.
It will include an introduction to the overall ICM program and the ICM Implementation Guide, details on the progress of the Dallas and San Diego demonstration sites as well as other sites working on ICM designs and deployments. Additionally, during a panel discussion issues and questions from and by the audience of moving the ICM concept forward will be discussed.
