Safety Forum Showcase: Driving and Distraction: Facts and Fallacies
Sponsored by Open Roads Consulting
Monday, May 3, 1:30 – 3 p.m.
Distracted drivers who text, phone or are otherwise inattentive has been a recently resurgent topic. Recent awareness and the prevalence of consumer devices has highlighted the dangers, and the national discourse has increased. There are a host of unanswered questions. Is the danger of distracted driving more acute, or is it simply that we’re more aware? What are the trends? What are the countermeasures? Hear experts drawn from academia, industry and the government discuss their perspectives. What are the trends? Can technologies add or subtract from the problem? In what directions could the ITS community go to address distraction?

Sustainability Forum Showcase: So What’s All This About Sustainability and Sustainable Transportation?
Sponsored by Iteris
Monday, May 3, 3:30 – 5 p.m.
We have all been hearing a lot about “sustainability” over the past few years. But what is actually meant by “sustainable transportation”, and how does it affect ITS and the associated management and operations of the transportations network; and vice-versa? Relying on the Brundtland Commission’s definition of “sustainable development,” ITS America has defined sustainable transportation as “meeting, and sometimes re-defining, the mobility needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs”. While the concept of sustainability is concerned with the social, economic, and environmental consequences of decisions, the focus of the ITS America Forum on Sustainability is the ability of transportation technologies, operations, and practices to help mitigate the environmental impact of transportation (e.g., reducing emissions) and adapt to the changing climate. This showcase will provide an overview of the Sustainability Forum, its various activities and recent and near-term products. Similar activities underway in the United Kingdom (i.e., the Carbon Working Group of ITS-UK) will also be presented.
