The Intelligent Transportation Society of America is aggressively involved in advocacy efforts related to the most vital transportation issues, including measuring and improving performance through ITS, dedicated funding for ITS solutions, advancing next generation innovations, bringing transportation into the 21st century, and financing the future of transportation, and others. These include:
-
Measuring and Improving Performance through ITS – Transportation funding should be linked to aggressive performance goals to ensure that the public investment results in measurable improvements in the transportation system. Performance can be effectively measured using ITS data and technologies, and ITS solutions are critical for improving performance in areas like accident, congestion and emissions reduction. Performance results and changes would be published regularly as part of a National Scorecard.
-
Dedicated Funding for ITS Solutions – To improve the performance of our transportation system, the next authorization bill should provide dedicated annual funding of $1.5 billion for ITS deployment and $3 billion for operations and maintenance, as well as flexibility and incentives, for public agencies and private sector partners to deploy and operate ITS to improve safety, mobility and the environment.
-
Advancing Next Generation Innovations – While we are making better use of today’s technologies, the next authorization bill should at least double the current funding for research, development and demonstration of the next generation of ITS solutions.
-
Bringing Transportation into the 21st Century – A significant investment should be made in the deployment of a nationwide communications network between vehicles and the roadway that will enable critical safety, mobility, commercial and consumer applications.
-
Financing the Future of Transportation – The current gas tax-based funding system is no longer sufficient to meet our nation’s transportation financing needs. ITS provides a variety of innovative financing alternatives, and the next transportation bill should include major demonstrations of ITS-enable financing systems such as a mileage-based user fee.
Technologies and solutions are available today to transform the future of our nation’s transportation system, and we have a tremendous opportunity to work with the new Congress and Administration to incorporate ITS solutions into the next transportation bill.
